Remove text from an image

To remove text from an image without leaving a smudge, the background behind the letters has to be rebuilt. Unlayers does that for the whole image at once: it separates every piece of text into its own layer and fills in the background underneath. Hide or delete the text you don’t want, keep the rest, and export a clean PNG.

How to remove text from an image

Why layers work better than an eraser brush

Most text removers paint over the letters you brush and guess what was underneath, one stroke at a time. Unlayers rebuilds the background once for the whole image and keeps the text as separate layers. You can take a word away, change your mind and bring it back, or put new words in the same spot: see edit text in an image.

Where it works well

Use it on images you have the rights to

Unlayers is for editing your own designs and images you are allowed to change. Do not use it to strip watermarks, credits or copyright notices from someone else’s work; under the terms you confirm you have the right to use every image you upload.

What to expect

Clean, designed images give near-invisible results. Text over fine detail such as hair, leaves or patterned fabric can leave a soft patch where the background was rebuilt, so zoom in before you export. Each converted image costs one credit; hiding, deleting and exporting are free.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remove only one word or one line?

Yes. Every block of text is its own layer, so you remove only the ones you choose. If a whole sentence came out as one layer, edit its text instead of deleting it.

Is the removed text gone from the export?

Yes. Hidden and deleted layers are left out of the exported PNG. Hidden layers stay in the saved project, so you can show them again later; a deleted layer comes back with Undo while you are still editing.

Does it work on photos, not just designs?

It works on any PNG, JPG or WEBP with readable text, such as a photo of a sign or a product label. The busier the area behind the text, the more closely you should check the result.

Do I need an account?

No. Try the demo without signing in, and buy a credit pack at checkout when you want to use your own image.
